Liam Neeson has taken his next assignment, as he’s been added to the cast of The Great Game. This is just one of two movies in the Kingsman franchise based on Mark Millar’s comic book series that is currently in the works. While director Matthew Vaughn has plans for a sequel to 2017’s The Golden Circle, this is actually going to serve as a prequel that will introduce us to a number of new characters. And one of those characters will be played by Neeson.
Matthew Vaughn, who directed both of the previous entries in the series, recently discussed some of his plans for Kingsman 3, which will apparently wrap up the relationship between Taron Egerton’s Eggsy and Colin Firth’s Harry. Buried within a report covering that bit of information was a new casting detail, stating that Liam Neeson will be included in The Great Game, which Vaughn is shooting now before heading off to shoot Kingsman 3. There is no word on who Neeson will be playing, nor were any additional plot details revealed. So it’s tough to know how significant the actor’s involvement will be.
This Kingsman franchise casting has a couple of implications. First off, Liam Neeson reinvented his career over the course of the last decade or so, starting with Taken, as an unlikely action star. Looking at that on its own, haven Neeson involved in this franchise makes a great deal of sense. Especially considering that the other side of his career has largely consisted of high-profile roles in noteworthy dramas such as Schindler’s List. On the other hand, Neeson was subject to a great deal of controversy earlier this year for certain comments he made, which means he could bring a certain amount of baggage with him to the production.
As many will surely recall, Liam Neeson, while promoting his movie Cold Pursuit earlier this year, made some comments that garnered a great deal of attention. The actor was recalling a situation whereby a female friend of his had been raped, allegedly by a person of color. Neeson was so upset by this that he was literally walking the streets with a blunt object hoping to be provoked by someone. Specifically, as he put it, a “black bastard.” Liam Neeson apologized for his comments after the fact, and the incident happened some years ago, but they were no less concerning to quite a few people.
In any event, it seems his career won’t suffer too much as a result. Whether or not it should is another debate entirely. As for the matter at hand, the cast for this movie also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Matthew Goode (Watchmen), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Tom Hollander (Bohemian Rhapsody), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Harris Dickinson (Trust), Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam) and Alison Steadman (Orphan Black). The Great Game is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2020. This news was previously reported by Deadline.
